Topical treatment of sarcoptic mange in brushtail possums

Current position

Topical bravecto (fluralaner) applied at 25 mg/kg is the current preferred agent for confirmed sarcoptic mange in brushtails, with a single follow-up at 4 weeks. Ivermectin remains acceptable where fluralaner is unavailable.

Confirm diagnosis via skin scraping or characteristic bilateral alopecia with crusting before treatment.

Fluralaner 25 mg/kg topical, applied between shoulder blades on clean skin. Re-treat once at 28 days.

Supportive care: fluid support, high-calorie diet, and warm quiet housing during first 72 hours.
